IDTECHEX TO CONSIDER USING PEROVSKITE PHOTOVOLTAICS IN EVERYDAY DEVICES

Technology company, IDTechEx, is considering the use of Perovskite Photovoltaics (PV) to power devices that are in constant use at home or for business.

According to them, the ability to power devices in a reliable way with cheap, sustainable energy enables the continuity of life for Internet of Things (IoT) devices without the need for battery charge or replacement, aiding the agenda for “a connected world”.

Perovskite solar cells have the ability to convert light to electricity when light is shown on the material. It is said to have high-power density like silicon PV but with low production cost and a quicker manufacturing speed. The solar cells also maintain high efficiency even in low light scenarios such as being indoor.

IDTechEx is looking to integrate these thin film solar cells in everyday IoT devices such as smoke alarms, motion sensors, and smaller electronic devices among others with enough light exposure; thus, the phasing out of batteries and wires.

Furthermore, the media release states that despite competition from other dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and organic PV manufacturers offering similar features, Perovskite solar cells are faster to manufacture in large quantities and with higher efficiencies which considerably put them at the topmost sustainable option based on varying IoT functions.
